Using Fasting for Healing and Weightloss

There may come a time on your keto journey where your sugar cravings and appetite have reduced and you want to access the faster weightloss and accelerated healing of Autophagy.

Autophagy is an advanced (and natural) state for your body where digestion is turned off (nothing needs digesting) and your body starts to clear out cells which aren’t working too well.  As it does, it encourages the growth of new, more efficient cells to replace the old, inefficient ones.

If you think about it in evolutionary terms, at times where our ancestors didn’t make a kill and were hungry, they would naturally have undergone autophagy – and as a result, would have keener senses and repaired muscles and joints, ready to join the hunt once more.

·         Blood sugars fall and insulin is not being produced

 

12 hours

·         Consumed food has been burnt off

·         Digestive system goes into rest state

·         Body begins to use stored fat as energy

·         HGH ramps up

 

16 – 18 hours

·         Fat burning ramps up, HGH peaks

·         Body fat is burned for fuel

 

24 hours

·         Autophagy begins (cell cleaning and repair)

·         Glycogen stores are emptied

·         Ketones circulating in bloodstream

 

36 – 48 hours

·         Autophagy increases 300%

·         Immune system resets and regenerates

·         Entering deep ketosis

 

60 – 72 hours

·         Autophagy reaches maximum benefits.

 

If this sounds extreme to you and you’ve never been able to fast before, it’s likely that’s because you have been on the carbohydrate rollercoaster and needing regular carby meals to keep your energy and mood stable through the day.

As you start to eat low carb and then keto, your body will get off the rollercoaster.  You may find you only eat twice (or even once) a day and from there it isn’t a massive leap to ‘miss’ a meal or two.  The energy boost you get as you move through 24 hours fasting has to be experienced to be believed!

Don’t panic though – you can still achieve great results without fasting, but it’s a fantastic tool if you choose to use it.
